Best Snacks Before Bed: 5 Simple Ideas
If you are hungry in the evening, keep the snack small and familiar. Here are five easy choices, plus when eating earlier may suit you better.
If you are hungry before bed, try a small yogurt, a little oatmeal, or toast with a topping you enjoy. Keep the portion comfortable and choose something familiar rather than making a large late meal.
You do not have to eat a bedtime snack if you are not hungry. It is one way to bridge a gap after an early dinner, not a requirement for good sleep.
5 easy snacks for the evening
1. Plain yogurt with a little fruit
Use a small bowl of yogurt and a few slices of banana or another fruit you tolerate. A suitable soy alternative is an option if you avoid dairy. You can keep it plain if that is what you prefer at night.
2. A small bowl of oatmeal
Cook a modest portion with water, milk, or a suitable alternative. Add a little cinnamon if you enjoy it. You do not need a full breakfast-sized bowl or several toppings.
3. Toast with nut or seed butter
Spread a little peanut butter or a suitable seed butter on toast. Keep allergies and your usual dietary needs in mind, and choose another option if this feels too rich before bed.
4. Cottage cheese with soft fruit
Try a small serving with sliced peach or pear. Keeping the ingredients simple makes this quick to prepare and easy to adjust to your appetite.
5. A few crackers with an egg
A boiled egg and a few plain crackers can be a convenient savory option. Prepare the egg ahead and keep it refrigerated until you are ready to eat.
How much should you eat?
Start with enough to address hunger without leaving you very full. Your usual dinner, activity, appetite, and any nutrition plan all matter, so there is no universal calorie target for a bedtime snack.
NHLBI's healthy sleep guidance allows for a light snack while advising against heavy or large meals close to bedtime.
Put the food on a small plate or in a bowl so you can see what you are having. Sit down to eat, then notice whether you are comfortably satisfied before taking more.
What if you get heartburn at night?
A snack immediately before lying down may worsen reflux, even if the food seems mild. Plan it earlier and follow the timing advice from your clinician. Our GERD snack guide explains how food, portions, and the gap before bed can affect symptoms.
If you need a bedtime snack as part of a diabetes treatment plan, use that individual advice. Do not remove it or change the schedule solely to follow a general sleep tip.
Do you need a food that is supposed to make you sleepy?
No particular food is required. The presence of tryptophan, magnesium, or another nutrient does not by itself prove that a serving will make you sleep better. Enjoy foods for their taste and nutrition without expecting a predictable sedative effect.
A regular sleep schedule and an evening routine you can maintain are more useful places to focus than searching for the perfect sleep snack.
Look at the rest of the evening too
Keep late caffeine and alcohol in mind; changing the food may not help if the accompanying drink is disrupting your sleep. Very large drinks close to bedtime may also mean more bathroom trips.
If you are very hungry every night, look at whether dinner and earlier meals are meeting your needs. If you repeatedly wake hungry, have other symptoms, or keep sleeping poorly, discuss the pattern with a clinician rather than continually changing snacks.
